Tui T. Sutherland is the author of several books for young readers, including the New York Times and USA Today bestselling Wings of Fire series, the Menagerie trilogy, the Pet Trouble series, and three books in the bestselling Seekers series (as part of the Erin Hunter team). In 2009, she was a two-day champion on Jeopardy!

Brightest Night is a mod for the Sigil System that deals with gaining and using holy and evil powers. Whether it is smiting evil doers, healing wounds, setting things on fire or controlling the minds of lesser mortals, you'll find it all in this mod.

Nothing, however, is for free and the key theme of Brightest Night is that you will have to give up something in order to get and use your new powers. If you fight for the light side, then this will mean swearing an oath or a vow to do (or not do to) something to receive your power. As long as you keep this vow then you will keep your power. Break it, on the other hand, and divine wrath will soon find you. If you prefer a darker shade of morality, then you will have to sacrifice something you have to get your hands on power. It's quicker and easier than upholding a vow, but sacrifice too much and you might end up losing everything.

Of course, you can always choose a little from column A and something from column B. Walk down the grey path of morality and use both types of powers to your advantage.

This is a list of the brightest naked eye stars to +2.50 magnitude , as determined by their maximum , total or combined apparent visual magnitudes as seen from Earth . Although several of the brightest stars are also known close binary or multiple star systems, they do appear to the naked eye as single stars. The given list below combines/adds the magnitudes of bright individual components. Proper names in this list are those approved by the Working Group on Star Names

Apparent visual magnitudes of the brightest star can also be compared to non-stellar objects in our Solar System . Here the maximum visible magnitudes above the brightest star, Sirius (−1.46), are as follows. Excluding the Sun, the brightest objects are the Moon (−12.7), Venus (−4.89), Jupiter (−2.94), Mars (−2.91), Mercury (−2.45), and Saturn (−0.49).

A glance at the night sky above Earth shows that some stars are much brighter than others. However, the brightness of a star depends on its composition and how far it is from the planet.

Astronomers define star brightness in terms of apparent magnitude — how bright the star appears from Earth — and absolute magnitude — how bright the star appears at a standard distance of 32.6 light-years, or 10 parsecs. (A light-year is the distance light travels in one year — about 6 trillion miles, or 10 trillion kilometers.) Astronomers also measure luminosity — the amount of energy (light) that a star emits from its surface.

More than 2,000 years ago, the Greek astronomer Hipparchus was the first to make a catalog of stars according to their brightness, according to Dave Rothstein, who participated in Cornell University's " Ask An Astronomer " website in 2003.

Stars are massive shining spheres of hot gas that exist in all galaxies across the universe. They were among the first objects to form in the infant universe, and they continue to be born in many galaxies, including our Milky Way. The star closest to us is the Sun. The next closest star (at a distance of 4.2 light-years) is Proxima Centauri.

All stars are made primarily of hydrogen, smaller amounts of helium, and traces of other elements. The stars you see with your naked eye in the night sky all belong to the Milky Way galaxy , the huge system of stars that contains our solar system. It contains hundreds of billions of stars, star clusters, and clouds of gas and dust (called nebulae) where stars are born.

Here are the 10 brightest stars as seen from Earth. These make excellent stargazing targets from all but the most light-polluted cities.
