Opera in 5 acts by Charles Gounod
Libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré  based on the legent and on Goethe's Faust . First performed  at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris on 19 March 1859.

F rom 1838, Goethe’s Faust never left Gounoud’s side. The simple theme, as old as time itself, was based on a timeless legend, one that obsessed him from an early age. But above all, he was interested in Marguerite: a young, ambiguous, frivolous woman, seduced and abandoned, who commits infanticide. The work has lost its philosophical dimension, but retains a great deal of charm. It remains an icon of French opera.

Thirty minutes before the beginning of the performance, a musicologist offers some insights into the work and the production. (except on Wednesday 7 February 2018)
